Newman will be dead two weeks come Saturday. My goldfish died a week ago. My tree was blown down in the storm a year ago January 12th, etc. Life is often hard, but I find strength in quotes. Why? I don't know.
I have a beautiful younger sister, Laura (yes I use real names). She loves digging for old bottles. When I went home last she revealed a huge box of bottles she'd been saving for me over the years to use as vases. We share a love of gardening, birds, nature, life. The box was so big and so precious I had to actually ship it back to CA because I was too afraid to entrust it to the airlines. This is one of the beautiful bottles with and Iceberg rose.
"To the outside worlds we all grow old.
But not to brothers and sisters.
We know each other as we always were.
We know each other's hearts.
We share private family jokes.
We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys.
We live outside the touch of time.
- Clara Ortega

My garden
"Instead of waiting for someone to
bring you flowers,
why not plant your own garden."

You all know I have a profound love of chairs just like Leah has a love of skinny white guys!!! This is one of my favorites and I'm going to use it in a painting (I lifted it from Queen Goob or Megan). I drew something similar a few years ago and worship that drawing!!! Yes, it's true, I love my own art!

"Come, let us have some tea and continue to talk about happy things."

"Tea pot is on, the cups are waiting. Favorite chairs, anticiating, no matter what I have to do, my friend there's always time for you."

"It isn't so much what's on the table that matters, as what's on the chairs." - William S. Gilbert

and I can't leave without this...

If Jeasus had been killed twenty years ago, Catholic school children would be wearing little electric chairs around their necks instead of crosses. - Lenny Bruce

I have thousands and probably 10 coffee table books I'd love to write about quotes. Now what are some of your favorites?

Leah said...

This is a WONDERFUL wonderful post. I love and adore quotes: quoting them, reading them, memorizing them. I was even an editor of a quotations book from Columbia University Press, in my days as an editor there.

I love the ones you've chosen--especially the Lenny Bruce. And it's deeply true about sisters, isn't it?

Some of my favorite quotes are from Dorothy Parker and Winston Churchill (an unlikely pairing, I know). Here's a few from Churchill, although overall I think it's best to read his stirring speeches in their entirety--God, what an orator!

"Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put."

"Great and good are seldom the same man."

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. "

"There is no such thing as public opinion. There is only published opinion. "

"Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result. "

"A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on."

And from Dorothy Parker:

"I've never been a millionaire but I just know I'd be darling at it."

"A little bad taste is like a nice dash of paprika."

Thanks Suzy! I'm sure I'll be back with more later.

Oh and when you get a chance, I saw "Man on Wire," was totally blown away, and posted about it. Did you see it yet? Philippe Petit is a wacky wonderful poet, I'm convinced. It's funny but I was telling Hedgie all about it, and she already knew the details of his WTC romp. It seems they had studied him in school and read all about it. Who knew? I like her school more and more with each passing day!

Leah said...

Yoo hoooooo....I'm sitting here quoting Churchill and drinking a pint all by my lonesome!

Megan said...

Hi Leah! I just got home and I haven't read this whole thing yet, but wanted to say yay! for Winston. I've been painting all day so got to go shower and get in my jammies and then I'll be back to have a beer with whoever's here!

I love hearing quotes. Infact i keep hearing quotes alot lately at work. Some of the elderly i work with have dementia and couldn't remember something you said to them two seconds ago but can recall quotes from way back from their childhood. This one came after i had finished dusting her tables and tv and bookcase etc.
" A blind man would be only too happy to see that" I suppose it sounds a bit politically incorrect to say that these days.It really got me thinking about quotes.

Leah said...

C'mon peeps, cough up the quotes! I'm still sitting here by my lonesome waiting!

no pressure though

Cece said...

You all will have to wait until I get home from work before I can cough up a quote. But one of my favorite one's is: There is fungus living among us! I know, I'm a microbiology nerd.

I just wanted to ask everyone to please pray for Gig. Her mom is in the hospital. I'll pass along more information as it come available to me. Also, I'm going to see Bindi and baby Noah and sweet Serene tomorrow. I will take some pictures and post them on my blog if Bindi permits me to do so. But either way, I will update on them as well. Talk to all of you soon.

My favorite quote comes from Henry Ward Beecher which is actually based on a biblical passage: “Fear not the stormy tempest that is at this moment sweeping through your life. A blessing is in the storm, and there will be the rich fruitage in the “afterward.”

“The Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and storm” (Nahum 1:3).

Queen Goob said...

Have fun tomorrow, Cece, and love to Bindi, Noah, and Serene.

As always, not only is Gig's mom in our prayers but she is, as well.

Skeeter said...

I like one from Ben Franklin, "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." I think this is entirely true, but I think that cleavage should have been added to the list of things that make us happy.

Best wishes,

Oh Cece, I haven't even called Bindi. Rob asked yesterday if I had and I said "No, I've been too ill." He said "She called weeks ago." *Hangs head in shame.* I said "Rob, there's nothing wrong with your dialing finger." *Rob hangs his head in shame.* I'll try to call her tomorrow morning before leaving for the park, but if I can't find the time, and you read this before seeing her, please give her our love and apologize for us. Let her know we'll call in the next day or two.

I'll give Gig a call. God, her family just can't catch a break. I've started to pray again, as I'm sure you've noticed, so I'll pray for them.

Cece, I love what you wrote at Bob's. You're a remarkable woman and a true friend. I'm grateful you're my friend too.

Queen Goob, you should share that with Bob. It's absolutely beautiful. I'm printing it and posting it on my bulletin board. Thank you.

Leah, Hi HONEY!!! Quotes kills me and I'm so glad they kill you too! Dorothy Parker and Winston Churchill, two of MY FAVORITES, but you forgot Oscar Wilde!!! Oh how I love that man.

"If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you."

"Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much."

"Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not the sitter."

"I think that God in creating Man somewhat overestimated his ability."

And here are some others I love...

"We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." ~Churchill

"The unexamined life is not worth living." ~Socrates

"Oh life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Romania."
~Dorothy Parker

(That's too funny!!!)

"Not a shred of evidence exits in favor of the idea that life is serious." ~ Brendan Gill

(I love that one and think it would be perfect painted on a huge canvas in the lobby of a world class law firm!)

"You're alive.
Do Something.
The driective in life, the moral imperative was so uncomplicated.
It could be expressed in single words,
not complete sentences.
It sounded like this:
Look, Listen. Choose. Act.
~ Barbara Hall, a summons to New Orleans, 2000

Leah, I could go on forever. Now that I know you were an editor, that's a good thing. I have a few books in me. I was just talking to RC about editing a childrens book, and now know you can edit my book of quotes. Here, let me rephrase BOOKS of quote! But this will make you laugh. I told RC that when Rob edits my work my writing becomes so perfect suddenly I'm a lawyer!!! I don't want to be a lawyer. I want my story told in my voice, just grammatically perfect!!!

I'm falling asleep. Thank God. Jo, I'll respond to you tomorrow. I honestly think this is my swan song.

XO to all!!!

You know it's funny Leah, I've never thought of myself as a writer, but I am. I have probably 10 books in mind, all illustrated by me of course, and all written by me. I have great stories to tell and I think they need to be told...with great editing of course!

This is beautiful... I always look at posts that you create, Suzanne, and go, "Ahhhhhh..." They are so visually stunning and comforting to look at. Then I read them, and go, "Ahhhh...." Because the content is always so comforting too.

You have a real talent for inspiring comfort around you. I love that.

Nice post, I came over from Megan's Toast Palace.
I love using old perfume bottle as bud vases (esp for mini roses and tiny things) it's easy to remove the metal & tubing with little tools. I also hang on to odd bottles in general. I like them better as vases than vases. Love Lenny Bruce--his comedy cds are great.! Did you see the film Lenny (Dustin Hoffman) ??

"Megan's Toast Palace" is a great name for a blog.

Hiya Avid! That is a good name. I might have to go create it just now so that I can have it just in case! ;)

Hi Bob!

HEY GUYS! Goin' to go grab a beer and watch really bad auditions for American Idol because we all know those are the best of the best episodes.

Just wanted to swing in and say "HEY" and I'm thinking of you!

I now own What might happen with it remains to be seen. Bwahahaha. And no, you can't go there yet.

Goodnight all & have a lovely day tomorrow! I'm off to bed because I forgot to pick up the stupid loan papers from my brother's place tonight and now have an hour's detour in the morning.

Megan ~ Jammies? Really? I always pictured you sleeping in the nude. *Fluffs green dress and adjust cereal box.* Think I need a new outfit...perhaps with a better antenna cuz this cereal box just ain't workin'.

Jo ~ Not politically incorrect. Just perfect. Made me see.

Cece ~ So where's your real quote? Oh crap I'm laughing too hard. And then of course, death. Why is it that as I get older everyone dies? Seriously. This is ridiculous. Of course I'll visit Giggie for a hug, kiss, a great cup of coffee and cookies. I know she has cookies because the G-kids are always bouncing off the walls.

QG ~ I love that quote. I printed and posted it on my bulletin board. Thanks for sharing it with Bob. I have an update from Bindi and will post it, along with photos as soon as I have time to gather my thoughts and use my fingers properly. Queenie, I didn't realize you knew Bindi. I just wrote you and email and I didn't know that. Sorry about that. XO

Skeeter ~ Well honey, as you know I'm a Ben Franklin fan because I studies his ass at UCLA. If he says beer is good. Beer is good!

Now about cleavage. I've never shown any. You're comment made me laugh and made me wonder why? Am I a prude? Too conservative? Nope, neither!!! I've just never needed to. I just looked down my shirt to reassure myself I have it. Yup, I do! It's so funny because I see woman all around and women on HGTV and the Food Network strutting their stuff and think, "WOW, you'd actually walk around like that?!!!" Yup, apparently! Man, men are very lucky.

Karen, Karen, Karen ~ I wish you could sit on my shoulder every day and inspire me. You're good for my soul. Seriously. Thank you sweetie. Love you! XO

Avid Reader ~ Megan's Toast Palace is just too funny. Any friend of Megan's is a friend of mine. Bottles. Oh God honey, don't get me started! Back on the east coast you "dig" for bottles at old homestreads, etc. because people used to dump stuff on their property. My sister is the Queen of The Big Dig! I have so many gorgeous old bottles and I agree, they're perfect for a single bud or can accomodate a mini bouquet. I love them. Also love Lenny Bruce. No, I haven't seen the movie, but hope to. Thanks for reminding me to get my VCR or DVD player set up! We only moved 4 years ago! XO

I sleep in the nude but that's just...not...a picture I want to dwell on this morning.

Lovely green dress, by the way!

Suzanne asks for my real quote,
Well...."I can only serve one person per day and today is not your day. Tomorrow isn't looking too good either." I don't know who it belongs to, but today, it is a motto to live by.

Suzanne said...

~Cece is such a wise ass, and she's serious because she called me "Suzanne."
How are you feeling Cecile?

~QG I promise not to look. *Brings apron from green dress up and over head.* CSI sure knows how to shop for women's clothing!

Did you guys see all my typos? Oh my God. Some are just too funny. It was so late...I mean early and I was so tired. I know you understand. Okay gotta go because I'm not here to blog, I'm here to look up a recipe and I know for damn sure it's not at the Wild Onion. Talk to you all later, hopefully.

Love and kisses, Moi! ;)
